Do You Know Your Role?

Hey everybody! So sorry that this post is late, but I had a crazy last few days! One piece of big news I would love to share is that I have found a job while I am up here at college! The only problem is that it starts at 4 AM. Since this is still early on in my blog I will just go ahead and mention for all of you who don't know: I actually HATE mornings. with a fiery burning passion. That being said, I had to change around my schedule to adapt to my new job, and taking nap when I get home!
So, onto the title of my blog because this entry is for university. This week we learned about roles in the family, and how each person has one to play. There were many examples given about it, but my personal favorite way that it was described to me is to compare the family to a burrito! because who doesn't like burritos right?! So each family member is a part of the burrito, right? For example: The dad is like the rice- he is the provider, he is the rock of the family, and he is the head of the home. The mom is like the tortilla- she keeps everyone together, she supports the entire family relationship, and she works to provide stability and a safe environment for at home life. The oldest sibling in the family is like the sauce of the burrito- very prominent, kind of leads the flavor of the children in the family, and is front and center for any big events that happen in life (they are the guinea pigs). The second oldest is like the beans- they are there to help support the family, they are also pretty prominent in the family dynamic, and they shine in their own way and make a statement. And it just keeps going down the line.
All of this being said, There is truly a role that each person plays in the family dynamic. Each member of the family finds that role, and then the others work their way around one another to help keep the harmony in the family. And each family is a little different, meaning that everyone's role will not always be the same from one family to another. This can lead very easily into personality development and habits formed for each member of the family. For example, lets say that there is a lot of discord between the mom and dad, but then one child gets into some trouble, and that child notices that their parents stopped fighting with each other and focused on the child in a united front. Once the trouble was over, the parents started bickering again, and the child gets into trouble again. This pattern continues and to the rest of the family, the child is given the role of "trouble maker" in the family, and for the child, they view this behavior as the "peacemaker" of the family. There are a million more examples of what different roles of the members of the family affect the family as a whole, and how that can correlate to each person individually.
My advice to everyone for this week, is to evaluate yourself. What is the role you are playing in your family? What part of the burrito are you? What do you want to change about yourself or that role? And evaluate the roles of your family members- what are some things that can be changed? what are some things you want to keep the same? Maybe even take some personality quizzes, to find out. But know yourself, and know your family, so that y'all can create a happy and safe environment to live your lives together. I have been doing a lot of self reflecting, and I am going to change some things in my life about myself. Because that is what life is- it is about evaluating who you are, and changing what you feel is no good, and working towards what you want to become. Your family is your family, and we should all try to strengthen our family relationships, because at the end of the day, your family is the one who is there to have your back (even if they aren't blood related) and when your find that harmony- nothing can stop you. At the end of the day, we are all trying to find that peace and harmony, we are all trying to find summer.
