My Family Culture

Hey yall! It has been another crazy week, and boy am I glad it is the weekend! I am still in search of a job here that helps me to still get my homework done, sleep well, and go to classes... seems reasonable right? Along with that I am just chugging away at my classes and trying to figure out how to balance everything. But, this post isnt a life-style post yet, this one, is about what I have learned in class this week.

I really liked this weeks lesson because it ties in really well with last week's about how each of us has a roll to play in the family. This one is all about family culture. This post is going to be kind of short this week, because I think this has less to do with explanation, but more to do with looking at your own family and seeing how it applies to you.

So the culture of a family is how your family operates without saying it out loud. For example, remember back to when you were a child. You broke the cookie jar, just completely shattered it, and your mom heard the crash. What is she going to do to you? For some, it would be a spanking, for others it is being grounded, for some it is her yelling at you and waving her finger, and for some it is her staring at you with "the look" and not saying a single thing, but you feel that trouble you're in. For everyone it is different, but that is part of your family's culture.

Lets try another one. You got an A+ of your report card. What does your dad do? Pat you on the back? Say "good job" and put it on the fridge? wave it off and not really say anything? That is also part of your family culture. It is all about the unspoken things you know are going to happen in response to things that occur in your family. If that sentence made any sense at all.

It doesn't just stop at the relationship between you and your parents, but it also occurs with you and your siblings, or if there are aunts and uncles or grandparents or anything like that in your household- that is all part of the family culture. So I ask yall today, to take a look at your family culture- and see what things you want for your family that are different than what you had- see the things that you do today that your parents did when you were young that carried over to your life now. And work on implementing those things. I know that for myself, I am going to work hard to make my family culture one that is open and warm and inviting, while still having firm policies on moral standards I want my kids raised by, becuase I feel like that is the way that I can find summer in my home.
